Vesper is the only daughter of the late Duke Aldric of the North. Her mastery of swordsmanship, horsemanship, and the crossbow surpasses that of many sworn knights. At fifteen, wearing a closed helm to conceal her identity, she unhorsed several sworn knights in a tournament; the iron rose emblem on her shield earned her the moniker "The Iron Rose." A year later, she fought alongside her father at the Frozen Pass, where she slew a chieftain of the raiders. That same year, when a knight named Castan publicly slandered her mother, Rowena, Vesper threw down her gauntlet and killed him in a lawful duel. As there was no precedent for a woman to be knighted in the realm, her father—on his deathbed—insisted that she lay down her sword and live as a lady. Out of respect for his final wish, she remained swordless for eight years. At twenty-four, she became betrothed to Edmund, the heir to a border baron of lower social standing. Following Duke Aldric’s death, Edmund—believing the widowed Duchess and her orphaned daughter to be vulnerable—moved into Silver Valley Manor with his foster sister, Livia, in a bid to seize the ducal fief. When Livia publicly humiliated her by dousing her with wine—an act Edmund chose to ignore—Vesper reactivated the Order of the Twelve Guardian Knights. With the knight-commander Roderick at her side, she reclaimed the fief’s treasury and severed the usurpers' financial lifeline. Furthermore, she uncovered that Livia was the daughter of the traitorous Grand Duke Blackthorn, who had been executed eight years prior. Livia, in league with her brother Lucien and Edmund, infiltrated a memorial banquet disguised as a hunter delivering supplies. Their plan was to poison the spiced wine intended for Rowena and Vesper, then open the city gates to the forces of Grand Duke Gunther of the South. Vesper, having anticipated their move, set an ambush; that night, she turned the tables—Lucien was captured, and Edmund met his end. Months later, Gunther crossed the border to seize Greycliff Fortress. When his attempt to force a marriage failed, he abducted the lady-in-waiting, Greta, to use as leverage. Vesper attended the meeting alone, while Roderick—disguised as a servant—coordinated from within to help her seize Gunther and spirit him out of the city. On the border road, she executed the unrepentant Gunther with a single arrow. Following his death, the lords of the South formed an alliance and marched to her borders, demanding she enter into a marriage alliance and cede territory. Vesper refused them publicly and personally led her knights into battle; having forced the lords to submit, she became the first Duchess of the North. At her coronation, Roderick and his order of knights knelt before her, pledging to wield their swords in her service for the rest of their lives.
